PERGOLUX Launches Motorized Retractable Awnings Amid Record U.S. Heat, Home Climate Adaptation
After the hottest month ever recorded in the contiguous United States, an award-winning outdoor living brand is betting homeowners will opt for smaller-scale climate adaptation as remodeling spending growth slows.
“Heat is clearly making shade more relevant, but we’re also seeing a longer-term shift toward homeowners wanting more control over when and how they use outdoor space,” says Anas Zandaki, Director of PERGOLUX North America.
PERGOLUX, whose signature pergola kits have been purchased by more than 100,000 customers around the world, is expanding beyond its core pergolas with a motorized awning starting at $1,799. The company’s engineering team says internal testing suggests the product can lower surface temperatures underneath by up to 20°F.
2026 U.S. Outdoor Renovation Trends Show Homeowners Prioritizing Affordable Solutions Over Major Remodels
July 2026 averaged 77°F across the continental U.S., breaking a record set in the Dust Bowl era.
Homeowners need relief from heat, but Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies’ latest forecast expects annual growth in renovation and repair spending to fall from 2% in early 2026 to just 0.5% by mid-2027 as renovation activity cools and economic uncertainty weighs on the market.
Shade remains one area where American homeowners are increasingly willing to invest.
The 2026 Houzz Outdoor Trends Study reports the share of renovating homeowners adding shade structures rose 15 percentage points to 35% in 2026, putting them second only to decks for most popular outdoor structural upgrades.
As hotter days become a bigger part of summer, shade is moving from a nice-to-have design feature to a practical comfort issue. The PERGOLUX Awning addresses this through:
- UPF 50+ fabric that blocks 98% of UV radiation
- Adjustable 5- to 25-degree tilt to address low-angle afternoon sun
- Motorized extension and retraction to change shade as conditions change

The PERGOLUX Awning creates a different entry point into the brand. It extends PERGOLUX engineering into more patios, decks and wall-mounted applications where a pergola may not make sense. The system combines shade, integrated lighting and motorized control in one product.
PERGOLUX Expands from Pergola Kits to Diversify Shade Systems
PERGOLUX built its business around making outdoor spaces more usable through shade and shelter. Their signature pergola kits have earned global design awards including a Red Dot Design Award in 2024 and iF Design Awards in both 2022 and 2023.
But not every homeowner wants or needs a full pergola.
“We saw an opportunity to use what we’re learning from customers around the world to better solve the same comfort problem with a simpler product and easier point of entry,” says Zandaki.
Aluminum Cassette Durability, Integrated LED Lighting, and DIY Installation
At first glance, the PERGOLUX Awning resembles other retractable awnings already established in the market. PERGOLUX says the differences are intentionally less visible, concentrated in material choices and built-in functionality.
Among them:
- Corrosion-resistant fully aluminum cassette protects the fabric, motor, and arms when the system is closed.
- PVC-sleeved stainless-steel cables reduce metal-on-metal noise.
- Integrated LED lights in the arms remove the need to add separate lighting fixtures.
- The design allows for a two-person installation in one day.
- An optional vibration sensor automatically retracts the awning when wind is detected
“We're competing on the entire experience. Our awning is built to last and offers modern features in a more affordable design. It won’t need replacing in a few years and works with lots of home styles,” says Zandaki.

Eliminating plastic and rust-prone components on the outside helped PERGOLUX eliminate failure points common in awning designs.
