Integrating your PERGOLUX electronic devices into a smart home system unlocks additional features, including:
- Voice commands that allow hands-free operation, letting you control your pergola roof, lights, or heaters without getting up
- Automations that can adjust your outdoor space on a schedule, letting you automate shade in the afternoon or switch on lights automatically as the sun sets
- Sync your outdoor space with other smart home devices or routines
- Manage everything in one place, with your pergola living in the same smart home app as your other smart lights, thermostats, or security system
- Control from anywhere, letting you open or close your pergola louvers before you walk outside or when you’re away from home
How PERGOLUX smart home connectivity works
PERGOLUX connects to your home using Matter and Thread technology, developed in 2019 by the Connectivity Standards Alliance whose members include Amazon, Apple, Google and Samsung.
Matter is a universal language for smart devices. It allows products to connect to any (or multiple) major smart home ecosystems including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings.
Thread creates a communication network between your smart home device, letting them work even when your wifi signal is down.
Think of two people talking on the phone: Thread is the telephone line and Matter is the language they're speaking.
Before creating Matter, manufacturers had to choose which smart home systems to design their products for. As former Google software engineer Jonathan Hui puts it, "with Matter, many of your smart home devices are now speaking the same language.”
Do I need to buy a special hub to connect PERGOLUX products to my smart home?
Usually, no. Many popular smart home devices like Apple HomePod, Apple TV, Google Nest Hub, and similar products already have Thread border router support built in, so most people do not need to buy a separate hub.
Once Matter was created, companies like Apple and Google made Thread part of the core products many households already use. This made setup easier and avoided the need to ask people to buy a separate router or bridge.

Automating your PERGOLUX system
Once your PERGOLUX product is connected to your smart home, you can create automations and routines that allow your outdoor space to manage itself.
Set schedules or build scenes that trigger actions by time of day, a spoken phrase, a tap, or when you arrive or leave home.
Popular ideas for PERGOLA smart home automations:
- Schedule your pergola roof to open just before sunrise, so you can step out with your coffee to open sky views
- Set roof panels to close at 10:30am during hotter months to keep outdoor living space cooled in the summer
- Schedule a scene that triggers at sunset to turn on your pergola’s LED lights and (in cooler weather) turn on a heater so your outdoor space stays inviting after dark
- Turn pergola lights on when your phone crosses into the neighborhood or your system shifts from "away" to "home" mode
- Build an entertaining scene ("Hey Google, let’s party outside") that turns on your pergola’s lights and triggers music on nearby smart home devices, getting the space guest-ready on demand
- After bedtime, set your pergola to close roof panels and turn off lights or heater so they are not left running overnight

Controlling your PERGOLUX products with voice commands
When you add a PERGOLUX system to your smart home, you can control it hands-free through Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant using voice commands. The louvered roof, LED lighting, and up to one heater device become devices you can name and control individually or together.
Simple Voice Commands
You can adjust your pergola roof, dim or color the lights, or switch the heater on or off all by voice. Each component is controlled using the name you chose during setup.
Examples of everyday commands:
- “Alexa, open the pergola halfway."
- “Hey Siri, dim the pergola lights.”
- “Alexa, turn on the pergola heater.”
- "Hey Google, turn the pergola lights red.” (for RGB light kits)
Voice Scenes and Automations
You can use Apple Home Scenes, Alexa Routines, Google Home Automations, or SmartThings Routines to allow a single phrase to trigger multiple actions at the same time across your PERGOLUX system and other smart devices.
A few favorites to try for your PERGOLUX system:
- “I’m cold” = roof panels close, heater turns on
- “I’m going in” = turns off the lights and heater, closes the louvers
- "It's grill time" = opens the roof, turns on the lights, and starts your favorite playlist
Once these are set up, your outdoor space arranges itself at your command.
Common Questions
Don’t see your question answered? Our live chat is staffed daily to provide quick answers.
Do I need a PERGOLUX hub to control my pergola?
No. Compatible PERGOLUX motorized systems can be controlled with the included remote or the PERGOLUX app without adding the pergola to a smart-home platform. A compatible smart-home hub is only needed if you want to connect your PERGOLUX system to Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home or Samsung SmartThings for voice control, automations, scenes or out-of-range control. Many homeowners already own a compatible device that can serve the hub role. There are no proprietary PERGOLUX hubs. Matter over Thread is a standard way smart-home devices connect to a home network.
Why does PERGOLUX use Matter instead of Wi-Fi-only HomeKit?
Wi-Fi-only HomeKit can work well for Apple households, but it is Apple-specific. Matter-enabled PERGOLUX products do not limit owners to one ecosystem, and can be connected to major smart-home platforms including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. Apple also requires a home hub for any Apple Home users who want to control accessories while away from home.
What if I only have older smart home devices?
Before purchasing anything, check the product specifications for your current devices for the terms “Thread” or “Thread Border Router.” If your current devices are older, and do not appear to support Matter, you can purchase a basic qualifying device from your existing preferred ecosystem or add a standalone Matter hub or Thread Border Router.
I already have a home Wi-Fi router. Is that the same thing?
Some newer Wi-Fi routers have a Thread Border Router built in, like Amazon's eero (Pro 6, Pro 6E, Max 7) and Google's Nest Wifi Pro. Check your router's specs for mentions of "Thread Border Router" or “Thread.” If it's listed, your router can double as your border router; if not, you'll use one of the hubs above (or a qualifying speaker/display you already own).
Where should I place my Tread border router device?
For the most reliable connection and convenient voice control, place a hub near or within view of your PERGOLUX product. PERGOLUX Series 4 pergola models onward features improved signal strength from earlier models, but keeping a hub within easy range means your command is always heard the first time.
Is smart home connectivity standard on PERGOLUX Series 4 pergolas?
Yes, PERGOLUX Series 4 motorized pergolas include smart home connectivity standard on integrated motors and lighting, with improved signal strength over earlier generations. The connection uses Matter connectivity, a universal standard designed to continue working with new smart home devices and platforms as they arrive.
Can I control more than one pergola?
Yes. Multiple PERGOLUX pergolas can be managed from the same smart home system, with individual automations for each. Setup each device with a unique name and enjoy.
Does my PERGOLUX pergola work during a WiFi outage?
Yes. PERGOLUX Matter-enabled products use Thread, a local mesh network that allows you to keep communicating with your device locally even without the internet. Cloud-based voice control may be temporarily unavailable until the connection returns.
How secure is the PERGOLUX smart home connection?
Extremely. Matter uses strong encryption so that only authorized users can control connected devices. Learn more from the Connectivity Standards Alliance.
How can I troubleshoot my PERGOLUX smart home connection?
PERGOLUX customers support agents are available via phone and live chat 7 days per week to walk you through troubleshooting your smart home connection. If the QR code won't scan, look for a manual pairing option in your app. Make sure your Wi-Fi or Thread network is stable and your phone is on the same network as your hub. Put the PERGOLUX control box into pairing mode by pressing the button on the bottom of the remote three times quickly; the LEDs will blink three times to confirm.
Which smart home apps are compatible?
PERGOLUX Matter-enabled products are compatible with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and Samsung SmartThings.
